A Game of Thrones Wedding Disguised as a Styled Shoot

Donaldson_Jones_BrittanyBarclayPhotography_GOT238_low.jpg

Bridey, see that stunningly gorgeous redhead in the exquisite wedding dress and sparkly shoes? That's Danyelle. And when the photograph was taken, Danyelle had no idea that moments later she was to walk down the aisle of her wedding disguised as a styled shoot; a shoot which she feverishly designed, handcrafted and created with her bare hands. How? Well, as the Creative Director at Fête & Frivolty Events (the planners who brought you this amazing underwater shoot!), Danyelle is surrounded with an extremely talented group of professional event planners, and these event planners surround themselves with only the best vendors. Vendors who have such a deep respect for the ladies of FFE, that they banded together to take part and contribute to a surprise of a lifetime. A surprise wedding!

The two cent tour? Teddy + Danyelle had a simple courthouse wedding three years ago. But, because Teddy is fucking awesome, he wanted to surprise her with an over-the-top wedding; one as fabulous as she is... So, he called Amanda (of FFE), and the planning began FOR 2019. But, while Danyelle working on an inspiration board for Fête's winter styled shoot, she had an epiphany and proclaimed, “This is it!”. She told Amanda that if she could choose any style, any look, any theme for her perfect wedding it would be EXACTLY like the Game of Thrones inspired winter styled shoot they had already begun calling ‘Winter is Coming’. And so it began... How? How did they pull it off? Well, I'll fill you in on the rest of the deets as you take in this A MAZ ING post... So, GO SCROLL, BRIDEY!!!!

The faux fur, the black invites, the blue... WOW!

Something sneaky? Amanda (of FFE) told Danyelle they couldn’t find a model and pleaded with her to alter the wedding dress her grandmother had bought her (the one she was saving for her "real" wedding to Teddy). Her intuitive grandmother, bought the dress for Danyelle when she and Teddy first began dating, convinced he was "the one" for Danyelle. Ma’am passed before she could see them wed – so the dress was a way of carrying a part of her grandmother’s love down the aisle when she couldn’t be there in person.

Danyelle created and styled every element of what she thought was a styled shoot. From her handcrafted shoulder piece & belt, to the Game of Thrones house symbols on the wine glass favors, to the dragon’s egg votive holders... This girl redesigned an oversized throne chair and created a ceremony set! She sewed, painted, sculpted, and hammered away for four months on the DIY decorative elements. And Teddy worked alongside her!

Bridey, you know I preach being nice while planning your wedding? Well, the same goes for us (as in, event planners)! Because of the solid relationships Fête & Frivolity Events has within their network, and the respect they show for one another, service fees were drastically reduced or waived entirely... Simply because they were inspired by Teddy’s love for his wife and the opportunity to play a part in their love story.

The Truth Hurts Tuesday ~ Why DIY Can Sometimes Make You Cry

I heard a DIY story the other day that just made me want to curl up in a ball and cry for this bride. Really... I wanted to cry for her. Because while DIY is FAB for several of you, some of us just don't have the knack for doing anything ourselves. Take me for instance... I have never pretended to be a DIYer, and for those of you who really know me (and I mean, like for reals), then you know that I surround myself with people who get shit done and know what they're doing, as opposed to doing ANYTHING myself. Now, that's not to say that I am lazy, or don't want to be a DIYer, it's just that anything I attempt to do myself (basically anything that requires building, gluing or reading directions) turns to shit. The good news? I know this about myself, and therefore I got off of the DIY train long ago.

I am a fantastic event planner because I love logistics, I have a keen eye for design, and I get off on seeing all of the pieces come together. But, that does not translate to doing anything myself, so bridey, if you are like me, never fear, you can still have an amazing wedding DIY or not. As for why I wanted to cry for this poor bride... Well, it is a long, crazy story.

In a nutshell? The bride completely underestimated how long it was going to take her to complete the centerpieces (all 22 of them) for the guest tables, and because of this, she ended up DIYing her own makeup (which thankfully,

The Truth Hurts Tuesday ~ I Should Have Been an Attorney

I'm thinking I should have gone to law school. No really, I should have. I come from a family of attorneys and judges, and going to school for food science and pastry was probably not what my folks had in mind for me. Although, they always supported my originality (particularly around food... I used to dye my hair with fucking Kool-Aid! Oh, and it worked!), I would be making piles and piles more dough, and then I would feel more comfortable charging by the hour.

Some event planners DO charge by the hour, and I am strongly considering changing the way I structure my business and getting on board with the whole charging by the hour thing. Because some of you brideys really take advantage when it comes to air time. If I divided what your wedding is worth to me from a dollars and cents standpoint, by the number of hours spent with you, on your behalf or on the phone with you, I would DEFINITELY be making more money if the clock started running the moment I said, "Hello." Harsh, but true. Would you feel as comfortable pouring your heart and soul out to me or dwelling on some very small stupid detail if you know that each minute was going to cost you $5? I don't think so. I think you would most likely curb the bullshit, get to the point, and move on. Right?

Yes, I love what I do. Yes, I care about what you think. And, yes, I do like you, bridey. But, sometimes I feel like you need to consider that time is money, and that I am a business; no matter how small or how personalized, I do what I do to make money. Don't you? So, when you keep me on the phone stuck on something that we have discussed over and over again that won't make a fucking difference in the overall scheme of your wedding day, it's all I can do not to reach over and grab the egg timer. I mean it... Go talk it through with your fiance or best friend, because at least they can drink when they are with you, and politely (or maybe not so politely) tell you to stop obsessing over the small shit, and focus on the enormity of what a wedding means.

Bridey, all I am saying is to please be mindful of your wedding vendors. We are too polite to tell you to shut your mouth, but our time is just as valuable as yours. So, put a sock in it, or I'm gonna break out that egg timer.

Super Stylish Sunday ~ Dreams Really Do Come True...

Look at this picture. I mean, REALLY look. Would you believe me if I told you that this is a rainbow themed, styled shoot at Morningside Manor in Arvada, Colorado? The reason I'm asking is because doesn't this couple look like a real soon-to-be or married couple? Seriously... I just can't believe that they are part of the shoot! Perhaps they are together in real life, or maybe after the shoot they got down and dirty... rainbow style. But, no matter what, the chemistry of the "models" mixed with the awesomeness of this styled shoot almost leaves me at a loss for words! ALMOST.

Okay, moving past the obvious sexual tension, I really applaud all of the hard work that went into this photo session. Brideys, if you scroll down, you will see some profoundly creative tablescapes, a fabulously cool cake and a pretty dramatic altar. If you're looking for a creative theme with tons of DIY elements, then check this shit out!

I have to admit, I'm not usually a fan of the bow on the chair thing, but because of the multicolor effect, I really love it!

I am obsessed with the alternating napkins and beverages! What a good idea! I mean... just throw a little vodka in the glass, and it may even be perfect!

YUM. YUM. YUM. And you know what the best part is? It's a cake that can easily be made by a friend or relative, that will look cool and cost you nothing.

The Truth Hurts Tuesday ~ I'm Not Your Hired Help!

Sooo... I totally changed my plan for today. I was going to talk all about making your wedding planning simpler, blah blah blah... Don't be a bridey bitch, blah blah blah..., but then I received this absolutely, painfully honest vendor vent, and I HAD to change my plan, because there was no way that I was going to let this one get by me without adding my two (or three) cents. Brideys, as wedding season quickly approaches, it's incredibly important for all of you to understand the difference between the event planner who works for the hotel, and the person you HIRE for thousands of dollars to plan your wedding.

As I've mentioned previously, prior to going out on my own as a wedding planner, I worked at several fancy hotels on the catering/event planning teams. And you know what? It wasn't fucking easy. It was a million and a half hours, physically demanding (thank God I am in such good shape... HA!), and honestly? The pay was shitty. Like, shockingly shitty actually. Like, so shitty that people outside of the industry who knew just how little we were paid were utterly blown away by the tiny compensation. But, I don't want to get off track, so we'll save that for yet another post about TIPPING your poorly paid manager...

Anyway, as bitchy and awful as some clients can be, sometimes our angst has nothing to do with you, bridey.

A Completely DIY, Absolutely Incredible Bachelorette Party Style Shoot

I could not resist this one brideys. I HAD to share this with you. I mean, how could I pass up a sparkly, glittery, super hot style shoot? Right? The best part? The price! Holy shit! I am totally dying over this, and I am so excited to show it off, because it is completely obtainable!

So, enjoy the eye candy, and learn more about this incredible "party" as I ask Amy Lovlien, of True Emerald Styling and Planning, a few questions about how to achieve such a lovely outcome without being a bridey bitch!

1. This is an absolutely incredible bachelorette style shoot for a DIY bride. What was the budget?

$1,000 for food, beverage & decor.

2. How long would you say the DIY preparations took (from a normal, non-event planner perspective)?

The hardest part of this shoot was gathering everything needed. We used a TON of glitter. After you have every supply it would probably take about 15-20 hours for one person to complete everything (or two long evenings with some friends!).

3. Where did you procure the items necessary for the shoot?

Paper Source, Anthropologie, Whole Foods
